Stuart Buchanan paintings are immediately identifiable and many of his popular themes are revisited.
This present series sets the tone with a selection of the artist's characters mesmerised by their watery surroundings. The paintings resonate quietude yet are subtly amusing.
The importance placed on water is undoubtedly inspired by the coastal location of the artist's home and studio in the remote fishing village of Catterline on Scotland's East Coast, as one can see, the figures have become more immersed in the context of the landscape.
It is no surprise to hear that Buchanan is not the only artist to be inspired by the views from his studio The Watchie (see above photo-image) This small fisherman's cottage was previously home to Joan Kathleen Harding Eardley 18th May1921-16 August 1963. One of Scotland's most important artists. She, like Stuart Buchanan studied at the Glasgow School of Art and Hospitalfield House. Joan Eardley was integral in Scotland's artistic heritage and Stuart Buchanan is following in her footsteps.
Buchanan has found a very comfortable refuge where the viewer can ignore the havoc of the outside world.
