POST PAINTERLY ABSTRACTION
Paul Kessling often uses distinctive painterly structures, stacks of stripes or fields of moving paint, forming images required of the same three dimensional form, but in a two dimensional space.
Paul Kessling trained as a sculptor under the tutelage of Sir Eduardo Paolozzi*at the Royal College of Art. After winning a traveling scholarship to study the Easter Island Statues his career took an unexpected swerve. With little room for materials he purchased some bottles of French ink and so began his journey as a painter, a medium he has been exploring ever since, developing how he sees and engages with the natural world.
Forming his abstract paintings using the same sculptural discipline required of the three dimensional form, but in two dimensional space. Kessling paintings evolve mainly from landscape; from places observed, sometimes just glimpsed, but always remembered.
The routines of painting form a discipline of looking and working with paint which creates its own rules, logic and momentum.
"My stripes have form, they are objects. These rhythmic bands of colour are the concentrated accumulation of many elements of visual experience of life outside in the open" Paul Kessling
* Eduardo Paolozzi (1924 - 2005) was one the most innovative and irreverent artists of the 20th Century. Considered the godfather of Pop Art, his collages, sculptures and prints challenged artistic convention.
*Paul Kessling is associated with the Modern Artists Gallery, Oxfordshire,
Arusha Gallery, Edinburgh, Cube Gallery, London.
