Why did I do the 'Bird Woman'? I have been doing Bird Man... many paintings. The idea of flying, freedom, movement, flow has been a undercurrent theme in my paintings for some time now
The 'Tube Map' series of paintings are a modern landscape. Since coming to London I have wished to do paintings of London. But Monet did Westminster and the Thames. Pissarro did rural landscapes outside of London. Turner did so many brilliant landscapes. For many years I searched London for my secret special location. But inner resistance prevented me. It seemed redundant to paint Saint Pauls or Big Ben. To paint in a traditional manner a landscape of London was not something I could feel sincere about.
The Underground has a design, a structure, a colour field. It is something that is the central nervous system to the city. Living in London for six years I have travelled on the underground on many occasions. Watching people, talking, having conversations with individuals, thinking, contemplating. Being stuck on the underground, or being squeezed on trains. Forget about getting a seat... Can I get on the fuckin' train... period. I really love London. It is a great city. So the Study of the Underground paintings are filled with colour, vibrancy, texture, transparency, depth and passion.
