Hugo Platt
HUGO PLATT IS A PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINTER OF
THE FIRST ORDER, FOR ONE WHO SPENDS
SO MUCH TIME IN THE DARK, HE HAS IN
THESE PICTURES SEEN THE LIGHT.

HUGO PLATT L A ND S C A P E 19th - 24th April 2010 at The Gallery in Cork St W1
Hugo Platt was born into an artistic family. Mother and Father both trained at the London Royal College of Art, and his brother Theo, who is the renown portrait painter. So it was almost a foregone conclusion that Hugo would follow in the family tradition.
However Hugo Platt's passion and talent was in another direction - photography.
Starting as press photographer for both regional and national newspapers, Hugo Platt perfected his skills as photographer and printer. Becoming aware of the great of the industry Ansel Adams who developed the zone system of negative exposure and of black and white printing.
Hugo Platt had found his media, and became one of those rare breed of photographers who can actually print his own images in the traditional manner of the great photographers such as Ansel Adams, Edward Watson. W. Eugene Smith. Terence Donavan.
Like these great masters who manipulated the black and white photographic prints to match the image in their head, of the picture they had taken. Hugo Platt works in the same way.
Most of Platt's work is shot on large format cameras. The larger size negatives give an incredible amount of detail even in this day and age of digital imagery and mega pixels.
Conde Nast Traveller, The Royal Geographical, British Journal of Photography and Photo Art International are using his urban and rural images.
'At a time when the art world flounders in a swill of
conceptual artefacts and esoteric installations, an exhibition of
landscape photography goes down like a glass of clear spring water'
