Phil Vickery exhibits extensively in the UK and Internationally.
Completing a degree in Glass & Photography at the University of Wolverhampton, and a post-grad in Glass Technology & Techniques at professional development level at the International Glass Centre, Dudley.
Phil Vickery was awarded the Stuart Crystal Memorial Award for the best free blown piece + a one year scholarship at the Red House Glass Cone. Whilst at the International Glass Centre Phil Vickery shared this scholarship studio with Nikki Williams who had also been honoured with a studio award.
The studio is in the glass cone itself. The Red House Glass Cone lies in the heart of the Glass Quarter. With 500 years of glass-making history it is an ideal place to be situated and is the original building where Stuart Crystal started in the 17th century. This studio, however, is a modern set up, built and designed by Richard Golding and Dean Hopkins.
Phil Vickery has now been given the opportunity to be the artist in residence at the Surrey Institute of Art (Farnham University) to develop new work and to help with the development of students at the University.
His work is driven by the need to be innovative, but also aesthetically pleasing and not too caught up in function, but feels his work is closer to objects of curiosity.
Greatly drawn towards sea life influences, most of his work has an organic feel to it. Living always with the sea at his doorstep and also the South Downs at his side made his childhood fun and close to nature.
Holding beauty to be very important in life, be it art or music, he is true to that philosophy. In so doing he finds his work taking on an organic feel and this leads to the non-functionality of the piece.
The work that seems to get the most praise is the ‘Twist Range’ and the ‘Shell Range’ as it involves an interesting technique where he makes a membrane partition that has not been seen before. This makes the work look more organic and very original.
The glassware piece ‘Shell Bowl’ has an organic membrane running from one side of the vessel to the other, making a beautiful optical feature and a metallic lustre. These pieces almost invite you to feel the inside and we have often witnessed people touching them whilst on show. The bowls are never the same as the membrane dictates the form to a certain degree making it a versatile collection worthy of any Contemporary Collector.
Phil Vickery is part of a group about to break into the American glass market - The Stourbridge International Glass Group in conjunction with Advantage West Midlands, and will be exporting both to the USA and Germany VERY SOON!
