Gert Naudé
Born: Jacobsdal South Africa
Studio: Greyton
Gert Naudé works on heavy duty board using a reductive technique by scraping off layers of paint to develop the work’s characterization.
This method of reducing (with fast, strong movements) creates a result which has a similarity to Chinese lacquer furniture.
Replacing the paintbrush with screwdrivers, putty knifes, fine steel brushes and nails to work the paint. The result are contemporary art pieces that juxtaposition ethereal beauty with the solid ancient environment in which they are created.
"I find creating art deeply meditative; it’s a translation of my
emotions into something tangible. I tend to focus more on the emotional
being than the figurative one, and see the religious and iconic themes
in my work as an expression of the ultimate portrayal of unconditional
love. My work is like a diary, I can look back and see where I was at
the time of its creation."
What
does it mean to Paint? .......It is like those few moments before
daybreak. When the darkened night, starts to shift. Painting dark blue
with black on the horizon. Then to look and see the warm oranges and
yellows pushing back the black , So far back that you forget that it
was night. Then the sun. You have to look away , the moment , the
energy is to much ! Then you look closer, nearer to your centre, up and
feel the sun on your head. The heavens blue and you feel wrapped in a
new hope. Starting again, a day to make a change, to bring joy, to
admire and just to say thank you, thank you!"
