Gesso is a carefully prepared mixture of rabbit-skin glue and chalk, heated with water and applied in several coats. Once dry and finely sanded the gesso gives a smooth white surface on which to lay paint. Applying layers of colour onto a gesso ground enables light to reflect back from the whiteness of the surface to give a luminous quality. It is the traditional ground used for painting icons.
