Now and again it is refreshing to stop trying to impose order and let random chance take over – letting ideas, experiences and day dreams collide. The objects I make are mementos of these random coincidences, pinned down like butterflies or photographs and preserving their memories – giving permanence to fleeting, chance events.
The objects contain references to many aspects of my life experience. The religious iconography reflects my love for Renaissance art and a childhood spent in Brazil surrounded by Catholic icons and Voodoo offerings.
A distrust of organisations clashes with a need to belong. The pieces both celebrate the mainstream and also unsettle it – where all dolls are treated equally and Barbie’s legs are given the same respect as the Virgin Mary.
But it’s not all hard work – I hope the pieces reconnect you to a time when play was instinctive and rules couldn’t be broken as they were yet to be learnt. There is a joy to the confusion and a celebration of the unexpected.
