D.I.Y 41 (Next of Kin) was originally shown as part of an Installation 'Do it All' made for Dark Space, Edinburgh in April 2000.
Walter French began painting in his late sixties. In a relatively short artistic career he has exhibited extensively throughout the United Kingdom. This piece is typical of French's practise of painting directly onto household objects. He describes the images as "motifs" of landscapes depicting "shared places in our collective memory". In covering objects with painted images he attempts to render the function of the urban device secondary to the notion of a rural environment.
