Two Scottish Painters and One Other  at the Modern Artists Gallery this Autumn presents a selection of new paintings by three invited artists, all of whom have strong connections with Scotland and the painterly tradition of its Art Colleges - Stuart Buchanan, Lucy Orchard and Frank To. Both Buchanan and Orchard have exhibited successfully with us in the past and the Modern Artists Gallery is delighted to unveil their latest body of work, as well as introducing new artist Frank To.

Stuart Buchanan\'s
evocative and textured paintings pay homage to the Scottish tradition of figurative painting, whilst retaining a contemporary edge.  Having recently relocated to the small fishing village of Catterline on Scotland’s East Coast, Stuart  draws inspiration from the area’s rugged landscape, its wildlife and changing colours, as well as from his own childhood memories.
Buchanan graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1992 and following a period of travel in Egypt and Chile, set up his first studio in Edinburgh before moving back to Glasgow in 1997.  After ten years painting full time from his Merchant City studio in Glasgow Stuart has since accepted a Scottish Arts Council Residency (in partnership with Aberdeen City Council) and now lives and paints in rural Aberdeenshire.
Stuart Buchanan exhibits Internationally as well as Scotland and England and is represented in England by both Lena Boyle Fine Art and The Modern Artists Gallery.

Lucy Orchard \'s recent body of work Cahooting with Caravaggio  continues to be concerned with the vulnerability of Contemporary living  (Orchard\'s  Solo Exhibition \'All Things Homely \' at the Modern Artists Gallery 2005)  demonstrating her very recognizable technique which incorporates her interpretations of the Old Masters.
Stylistically Lucy Orchard\'s work is characterized by a frequent transition between both flat and densely worked areas and delicate flickering outlines.
Lucy Orchard has exhibited extensively in England and Scotland since graduating in 2003 from Cumbria University with a Masters Degree in Fine Art.  Her work is now in many private and public collections.

The Modern Artists Gallery also showcases Frank To,  a Scottish painter living in Glasgow, whose reputation is flourishing rapidly.
Frank To\'s first solo exhibition Visual Thinking, in Glasgow in 2003, kicked started a succession of mixed and solo exhibitions across the UK and Scotland. Including New Face at Beaux Art Gallery, Bath (2006) and more recently New Acquisitions at the Albermarle Gallery, London (2007) as well as the Fairfax Gallery who have represented To at the Affordable Arts Fair since 2005. Collectors of his work include Patrick Stewart the renowned Classical Actor and Film Star.

Frank To completed his Masters Degree in Fine Art at the Duncan of Jordanstone Art School The University  of Dundee 2005.
Frank To’s style is attributed to the Renaissance sculptor, Michelangelo. It was said Michelangelo could visualize the human form within a block of marble. Frank To, similarly, teases out figures from initially abstract images.

* Frank To has recently been nominated for the Prince\'s Trust Royal Bank of Scotland Entrepreneur Award. We believe To is the first Scottish artist to be nominated for a business award.

Two Scottish Painters and One Other brings together artists that have been selected because of their strong affiliations with Scotland and the Borders.  All three artists creative style result in a great sense of intimacy and fascination with their work. Providing a soothing and complimentary mix of colour, talent, depth and fixation.
